DEZZO

The village on the rock

The Val di Scalve is a treasure chest full of naturalistic, landscape and historical jewels. Surely, one of these is the village of Dezzo.

The name derives from that of the homonymous stream, which crosses the town and which, in this stretch, flows placidly. Its crystal clear waters bring refreshment in summer and are a pastime for local fishermen.

One of the most convenient accesses to the river is located at the height of the Sanctuary of Our Lady, one of the places most dear to the inhabitants of the valley, whose history is, among other things, linked to that of Gleno Dam. The original church, in fact, was destroyed on December 1, 1923, when the dam wall collapsed. But only four years passed and, in 1927, the current Sanctuary, similar to the original one, was erected, thanks to the dedication and passion of the entire population who managed to raise the funds necessary for the reconstruction.

Those who visit the Sanctuary today can drink the water from the miraculous spring by descending about twenty meters to the riverbed where the original environment has been recreated as faithfully as possible.

The peculiarity of the town consists of a building, known as the “house on the cliff”. This is the Civic Tower, a curious building located more than 15 meters high, of medieval origin, dating back to the 14th century and recently renovated.

In turn, the Civic Tower is also linked to the Gleno disaster. The erratic boulder on which the building stands, in fact, resisted the impact with the water, diverting its flow, so that the town on the left of the stream would be saved from destruction.
